Your Appealing Apple Dish Could Pick Up a Big Prize

t this time of year, roadside stands and grocery produce aisles are abundant with crisp, fresh-picked apples. Whether you enjoy munching a juicy McIntosh, ending dinner with a warm slice of apple pie or topping toast with a smooth, tangy apple spread…autumn is the season for the best pickin’s.

That’s why we thought the time was ripe for our next national recipe contest, “Apple Appeal.” Please thumb through your treasury of recipes and pull out your best downsized apple dishes. Any recipe that spotlights apples, applesauce or canned apple pie filling is eligible to win one of our great prizes, including the $500.00 Grand Prize.

    Here’s what we’re looking for:
  • Desserts. Our judges can’t wait to try nicely spiced baked apples, ooey-gooey caramel apples, homey apple-cinnamon muffins, old-fashioned applesauce cake, chewy apple-nut cookies…and that special apple pie for two.
  • Main Dishes. Share your tried-and-true entrees that always win raves, such as Pork and Apple Supper and Sour Cream-Apple Chicken. Send us your meatless main dishes and breakfast entrees, too.
  • Side Dishes. We’d love to receive savory accompaniments like Walnut Apple Rice and Sweet Potatoes with Apples. And don’t forget sweet sides like Fried Apples.
  • Salads. Do you toss together a tasty variation on Waldorf salad, a fun fruit salad or a crunchy green salad or slaw with crisp chunks of apple? Send it our way!
  • Other Treats. And don’t forget to submit traditional recipes for favorites like apple dip, apple butter and applesauce, too.

Deadline for entries is January 5, 2007. We’ll select Grand Prize, second-place and third-place winners plus five runners-up. The eight winners will be featured in the Fall 2007 issue.

Remember, good things do come in small packages, and if your recipe is one of them, you could reap big rewards!

Contest Prizes

In each contest, we’ll select three top winners, plus five runners-up. The winner whose recipe is judged “best of the best” and takes our Grand Prize will receive $500.00 in cash!

Our second-place winner will cash in, too. The cook whose recipe takes the No. 2 spot will receive $250.00.

For third place, we’ll award a prize that would thrill any cook—a Euro-Pro Convection Toaster Oven valued at $89.99. With its extra-deep dimensions, this countertop oven is big enough to bake pies, broil a whole chicken, or even cook a pizza (a pizza stone is included). But you’ll save on energy…and won’t heat up the whole kitchen when you use it.

In addition, we’ll award prizes to five runners-up. Each of these creative cooks will receive Taste of Home’s Quick-Fry Electric Skillet, valued at $24.99. At 7 inches, this handy appliance is sized just right for preparing meals for one or two.

You may enter more than one recipe. Be sure to include the contest topic and your name, address and phone number on each recipe.

Please include a few words about the recipe and a bit about yourself.
